What are we attracted to?
We are attracted to people who are similar to us. People who are interested in the same activities will be more attracted to each other than people who enjoy completely opposite things. A study done by Donn Byrne showed that students generally liked people better who agreed within different topics. This proves we like people more who have similar opinions as us.
But can we only be attracted to people similar to us? Not necessarily. We may also pair well with people who compliment our personality, also allowing for attraction to grow. For example, a shy girl with a good sense of humor and an outgoing boy with a good sense of humor may pair well together (2 Know Myself Article). |
But why are we attracted to people similar to us?
Whether we are attracted to males, females, or anything else, we want people similar to ourselves. Why is this? "Most importantly perhaps, sharing similar attitudes provides corroboration that a person is not alone in his or her belief" (Similarity/ Attraction Article). When someone shares the same beliefs, opinions or thoughts as you, it is almost as if we have a "window" into their future behavior.
In general, people look for themselves in everyone. We are attracted to people with similar attitudes as us, similar personalities as ourselves, and even physically similar to oneself. For example, tall people are more likely to marry other tall people. It doesn't stop there! Studies have shown that people are also more attracted to similarities in these subjects as well: socioeconomic status, religious beliefs, social habits, like frequency of attending parties, bad habits, like drinking and smoking, ethnicity and intelligence. (Similarity/ Attraction Article).
